Five States of Change: Fire
W.M. Sobieska
- Instrumentation: Alto Solo — for any solo instrument, alto clef
- Wuxing:
From among the Four Guardians,
which are mythological creatures
that appear among the Chinese constellations,
Fire is linked to the Vermillion Bird,
which frequents Western culture in the guise of the Red Phoenix.
It is associated with warmth, with Summer, and with the South.
In terms of the human life cycle,
fire is analogous to puberty.
Its energy is fully Yang, propelling Fire,
with its unbridled outbursts of enthusiasm,
through unpredictable adventures
to a realm of full flowering
and -- ultimately -- Triumph.
