Five States of Change: Earth
W.M. Sobieska
- Instrumentation: Bass Solo — for any solo instrument, bass clef
- Wuxing:
In a metaphorical sense, Earth is "the heart of everything there is."
It signifies the perfect balance of yin and yang energies.
Rather than being represented by any one of the four directions,
it lies at the central point of the compass in the Chinese cosmos.
Earth is associated with the time between the seasons,
or, alternatively, with the period occurring between August and September
and known as Late Summer or Long Summer:
a time of moderation and fruition.
Earth is a harmonizing element that contains all four of the others.
Its color is yellow and it governs the spleen.
